Tommy Cloce of Potsdam, a regular on the Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Tour, will drive a DIRTcar Modified prepared by Wes Moody in select races at Airborne in 2013, including the 60-lap 60th season opener Saturday, May 4.
Airborne fans saw Cloce place third in a ROC event in Plattsburgh in 2011. His father Ed Cloce raced with Wes Moody in the 60’s and 70’s and owned the famed “Hemi-Cuda” No. 69 driven by past Airborne champion Jean-Guy Chartrand.
Cloce has been racing since 1999. He was a multi-time track champion at Adirondack International Speedway. In 2009, he was named the national Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Champion.
“My team had a great time when we came to race ROC Modifieds at Airborne,” Cloce said. “It was a real neat race track with a lot of enthusiastic fans. I know racing a DIRTcar Modified is going to be a lot different. There will be a bit of a learning curve no doubt, by my family goes back a long way with Wes and I know I’ll be in good hands.”
Cloce’s dad, Moody and New York Stock Car Racing Hall of Famer raced together often and are close friends. “The Cloce’s are wonderful people,” Moody said.
“I’m also pals with Jean-Paul Cyr, who did some open-wheel Modified racing and Brian Hoar,” Cloce said. “I know Airborne fans know those guys.”
Cloce is the General Manager of the family’s dealership, TJ Toyota in Potsdam. He has a 14 year-old son Nicholas and twin 10 year-old sons Tanner and Ashton. “They’re looking forward to coming to Airborne,” he said.
