MANY SUPER DIRT MODIFIEDS HEADED TO AIRBORNE |
Plattsburgh, NY – Many of the top Modified racers in the northeast will invade Airborne Speedway Sunday, June 7, for the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series “Battle of Plattsburgh” event. The race, presented by local sponsors Northline Utilities and Hynes Electric, marks a rare appearance at an asphalt track for the Big-Block Modifieds that normally compete on dirt tracks throughout New York, Pennsylvania, Ontario and Quebec.
Drivers chasing championship points on the 2009 Super DIRTcar circuit include 2008 champion Billy Decker, future Hall-of Famers Brett Hearn and Danny Johnson, Steve Paine, Matt Shepard, Jimmy Phelps and Ryan Phelps.
Phelps, 24, is a racing high school history teacher and wrestling coach from Fulton, NY. He drives the Big Red Towing/Gypsum Express No. 99. Phelps began racing go-karts at age 10 and won his first Big-Block Modified race at Can-Am Speedway in 2004.
“ I have a limited amount of asphalt experience in a quarter-midget,” Phelps said. “I hope I can make it payoff and translate into a good run at Airborne. As tour guys we often have an advantage when we go up against local racers, but we’re going to be in uncharted territory on the asphalt. I know there are some good teams at Airborne. I hope we can come in and stay with them on their home track.”
Airborne’s 56th season opener is set for Saturday, May 2. The 35th American Canadian Tour (ACT) Spring Green 100 goes Saturday, May 9.
