Airborne boosts Sportsman "4-20's" purse and point fund

South Plattsburgh, NY -Airborne Speedway has announced that J&S Steel of Plattsburgh has renewed its sponsorship of the Sportsman division for the 2011 stock car racing season.
J&S Steel, Vermont Life Safety and Airborne Marketing Manager Sherm Hamel have arranged to double last year’s payout for the Sportsman headliner “4-20’s” event and create a $1,000 point fund lottery.
The Vermont Life Safety 4-20’s race, set for August 13, consists of four 20-lap sprints, each now increased to pay $500 for 1st place. 4-20's winner Bucko BranhamThe line-up for successive legs of the race is set by inverting the previous order of finish. The overall event winner, determined by the lowest total of combined finishes, also earns $500.
"The Sportsmen are a pretty competitive division," Hamel said, "but if someone can win every segment, they can go home with $2,500.”
J&S Steel will provide a year-end bonus to the division’s point fund. “We’ll have a drawing among the top ten drivers and the winner will walk away with a $1,000,” owner Jeff Sears pledged. “All of us at J&S Steel are looking forward to the 2011 racing season at Airborne Speedway. I think 2010 was the best year ever at the speedway. The whole Airborne staff really goes out of their way to bring quality family entertainment to the Plattsburgh area. We are very proud to represent the Sportsman division and add some extra incentive for the racers.”
Bucko Branham of Plattsburgh was the overall  “4-20’s” winner in 2010, edging out track champion Robin Wood and rookie Bill Thwaits, who dropped out with electrical failure on the last lap.
The Champlain Valley Motorsports Show at Plattsburgh’s Crete Civic Center is scheduled for Friday and Saturday April 14, 15. Airborne’s 58th season begins Saturday May 7.

Don Scarborough’s No. 11 Modified crew getting bigger

South Plattsburgh, NY -Don Scarborough of Brandon, VT, fourth in the Ernie’s Discount Tools Modified point standings last season and the 2010 Tri-Track Modified series winner at the wheel of the Interstate Batteries No. 11, is adding crew members for his 2011 Airborne Speedway Modified title bid.
Scarborough’s twin sons, Jake and Joey, who attend Otter Valley Union High School, have turned 14 years old with visions of Airborne pit passes in their heads. 11Not only will they lend a hand on Saturday nights at Airborne, they’ll share a ride in Scarborough’s '04 Bicknell chassis Modified at Canaan Fair Dirt Speedway on Friday nights.
Scarborough has one eye on giving the likes of defending Modified champion Patrick Dupree, Martin Roy, Leon Gonyo, Greg Atkins, George Foley and Bryant Trim a run for the 2011 title and one on mentoring the boys.
“I’ve already told them that it’s 50-50 in the beginning, but before long, putting time in on the car is going to count the most,” Scarborough said. “If either one, or both, find out they like to race, we'll have something we can share down the road. After your kids have grown up and gone off to college or whatever, how many activities do you have in common?”
The “Brandon Bandit” had five top-5 finishes in 2010 and won the Modified Dash for Cash the night the ISMA Supermodifieds made their first ever appearance at Airborne. Scarborough recently sent his primary motor to engine builder Pat Morrison in preparation for 2011. “It’s an aluminum head Edger engine," he said,"It’s going on the dyno to see what’s happening on the high end.”
